Ctrl/Cmd + wheel zooms toward your cursor, and the frame numbers are the real trick — each frame shows its number, and you can jump straight to a frame by its number from the navigator.
Exactly what Elena said — and zoom clamps between 20% and 300%, with the readout resetting to 100% on double-click.
